OBJECTIVES
  • 1) Equip the basic skills of the English language among children through joyful learning.
  • 2) Focus on reading fluency and comprehension strategies to help children evolve as self-learners’ through joyful learning.
  • 3) To give additional support to the children by acquainting them with the vocabulary related to other subjects like Maths and EVS that can help them in catching up with the English environment.
Components & Approach
  • 1) Core basics of the language viz., Sound letter association, listening, speaking, reading, comprehending and writing.
  • 2) Subject-specific vocabulary pertaining to Math and EVS
  • 3) A multimodal approach i.e., VARK (Visual, Audio, Read/Write and Kinaesthetic) is used to stimulate learning.
  • 4) Audio Visual stimuli with a focus on listening.
  • 5) Activity-based material (ABM) in which learning takes place joyfully.

  • Ability to respond to instructions.

INTERACTIVE READING
(Transaction Time in the classroom: 40 minutes)
An interactive read-aloud is a reading strategy whereby children actively engage in listening to the text.

COMPONENTS:
Familiar stories in the abridged version with in-slot questions
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
  • Understands what is thinking-aloud.
  • It helps students to understand reading fluency.
  • Able to understand comprehension strategies.
  • Increases students’ listening skills and attention span.
  • It enhances imagination, creativity, memory, and curiosity.
  • Promotes discussions about topics in critical and significant ways to Helps in articulating ideas.
  • Note to teachers –. No bi-lingual transaction. Use pictures/ gestures/ modulation/ blackboard/ questions to make every child participate.
SHARED READING
  • (Transaction Time in the classroom: 40 minutes)
  • Shared reading is when a teacher and a large group of students read the text together.
  • Component – A text with pictures
Expected Outcomes:
  • Student practices think-aloud which provokes thought process.
  • Read-aloud improves reading fluency.
  • Know the strategies of comprehension like asking questions in an attempt to clarify doubts and also wonder about what will happen.
  • Makes connections like the text to self, text to text and text to world.
  • Other aspects like summarizing, inferring, predicting, etc. will be imparted.
  • Helps student evolve as a self-learner.

TRANSACTING WORKSHEETS & CREATIVE WRITING

(Transaction Time in the classroom: 40 minutes)
Why: Worksheets are meant to improve writing and thinking abilities and help the teacher to know the outcome of the learning.

Components:
  • • Exercises viz. Joining Dots, Match words with pictures, Ticks or circle, Classify, Label, Matching, Grading Opposites, Identify, Mind Mapping, Guided Drawing, Alphabetical Order, Jumbled sentences, Word Chain, Crossword Puzzle, Choosing the right one, Odd man out/Circle the wrong, Maze, Scramble letters, Secret Code, Missing letters, Name it, Using help box, etc.
  • • Prompts for creative writing
Expected Outcomes
  • To Reinforce the new skill gained during learning
  • Allows the students to explore knowledge independently
  • Helps the students to acquire a combination of skills
Note to teacher
  • Give clear instructions to each task separately so that the children carry out the activities comfortably.
  • Ask questions that would stimulate the child:
  • Give enough time for children to work on.
  • See that the whole class is engaged in the activity.
  • Make sure that activities are carried out within a given time.
  • Discuss responses.

AV TIME (AV means Audio-Visual.)

Audio-Visual (AV) time is the most engaging of all components where students are shown videos that are intended to expose them to English vocabulary and conversations.

  • Day-6 Movie
Principle: Child’s attention span is directly proportional to the age of the child. As teachers we need to be conscious of the fact.

ENTERTAINMENT TIME

  • Entertainment time is aimed at providing opportunities for children to use language and practice skills.
  • Objective is to develop soft skills, emotional intelligence, imagination, creativity, socialization.
